Our tips

How to avoid the queue to Anne Frank House

  • You should definitely book your tickets on the museum’s website and do it well in advance! There is only a limited amount of tickets available for each time slot, and in high season (May-September) they are usually sold out for the upcoming weeks. Booking the ticket is the only way to avoid waiting in line! If you have a Museumkaart - you should also book your place through the official website. If there are no more online tickets available, then you can buy tickets at the Anne Frank House entrance. Be prepared for a long wait: this museum has the longest waiting line in Amsterdam. 2,5 hours of queue during summer is normal!

  • A new entry system appeared in May 2016: the museum will only be open to visitors who bough an online ticket for a particular timeslot between 9:00 and 15:30. Then, from 15:30 until closing time, the museum will be open to those without an online ticket, who will need to buy one at the entrance. This means that from 15:30 until closing time, waiting lines will probably be very long, especially at the beginning of the afternoon.

Choose the date and time carefully

  • Weekdays are always better, Sundays are a bit less crowded than Saturdays.
  • The worst time to arrive at Anne Frank House is the opening hour, as the queue is the longest between 15:30 and 17:00. You’ll lose several hours before getting inside.

  • Another option to avoid waiting in line is to arrive 1 or 2 hours before the closing time. After 19:00 the wait won’t exceed an hour, and there’s usually no more queue after 20:00. If you decide to try visiting the museum in the evening - don’t leave it for the last day (just in case you don’t manage to enter by the “last entry” time and thus miss out).

  • Choose a sunny day for your visit. In Amsterdam waiting lines to museums tend to double in length when it’s raining. If the average wait on a sunny day is about 1,5 hours - it will become 3 hours on a rainy day!

  • You can try to guess your entry time: 500 people in front of you mean about 2 hours of waiting. If the line goes up to the Homomonument - you won’t spend less than 1 hour in it. 150 people in front of you are equal to 35-45 minutes of waiting.

Some useful information to avoid disappointments once there: - Photos are not allowed inside the museum - A free cloakroom is available for coats and luggage. You can only take a little bulky bag during your visit (size of an A4 sheet or less). - It should be noted that the house has many staircases: disabled people will therefore not be able to make the visit in good conditions.
