Top tips

The best way to avoid crowds at the Lincoln Memorial is to visit it early in the morning or late in the evening.

Avoid major public holidays, especially the 4th of July. The Lincoln Memorial (as a part of the National Mall site) is one of the most crowded places to watch the fireworks in Washington.

Political rallies, military anniversaries and special events tend to bring many more visitors to the Lincoln Memorial.

At the end of the school year you may meet lots of school groups on field trips. Prefer visiting in the fall or winter.

Cherry blossoming time is one of the peak periods at the National Mall and the Lincoln Memorial as well.

The entrance is free, and when it starts raining - the memorial instantly fills with people.

Visiting the Lincoln Memorial at night is the best solution to avoid crowds and be impressed by the structure, as it’s even more impressive when illuminated.

Weekdays see less visitors, especially mid-week. Try to avoid coming on Saturday, as it’s the busiest day.

Rangers provide interpretive programs every hour, on the hour from 10:00a.m. until 11:00p.m.

By car:

General parking is available along Ohio Drive, SW between the Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson Memorials. Handicapped parking is available adjacent to the Lincoln Memorial on Daniel Chester French Drive SW.
