What to know about Tanah Lot
Tanah Lot is one of the important directional temples in Bali. It is located on a rock just offshore.
This is an extremely popular tourist destination, one of the icons of Bali, that’s why it often gets very busy.
At low tide you can walk to the base of Tanah Lot and be blessed for a small donation. As the tide varies through the day, check the tide times before planning your visit.
Best time to visit Tanah Lot
Low season in Bali lasts from mid-January until mid-April and from mid-September until mid-December. You can avoid crowds and find cheaper hotel and flight rates.
High season falls in late spring and summer, first half of September, Chinese New Year and Easter week.
Peak periods, when there are crowds of tourists in Bali, are the months of July and August, the last week of December and the first week of January. The roads become heavily congested and it may be difficult to find a place for dinner without a reservation. Expect to pay almost double for accommodation.
Try to avoid major public holidays (16th of March, Nyepi Balinese New Year, 17th of April, Indonesias Independence Day, etc.) and religious festivities (especially Galungan, the most prestigious festival, that occurs every 210 days and lasts for 10 days). That’s when there will definitely be crowds of visitors at Tanah Lot (but it would also be a unique experience).
On the holy day of Kuningan, five days prior to the temple’s anniversary date, there is the heirloom pilgrimage which is one of Bali’s festive parades worth witnessing. Dress and act respectfully as on any temple visit in Bali. Here are the dates for future anniversaries at Tanah Lot:

The most popular time to visit Tanah Lot is in the evening, at sunset. Most groups and tourists arrive about an hour or two before the sun sets and stay until it gets dark.
We suggest you arrive in the morning to avoid the crowds, especially during high season. Avoid lunchtime, as it usually gets too hot at this time.
Even in peak season you can come at 7am to find the place all to yourself (or almost) and take photos.

Tanah Lot is about 45 minutes by car north west of the main southern tourist areas of Kuta, Legian and Seminyak and is en-route for those heading to West Bali. From Ubud it can reached in about 30 to 40 minutes by car.
A taxi from Kuta will cost about Rp 300,000. It’s possible however to bargain up to Rp 100,000 if you’re determined enough.
