Capitoline Museums

The Capitoline Museums comprise in fact three museums, all located in Piazza Campidoglio: Palazzo dei Consevatori (the main building where the only entry to the museums is situated), the Tabularium and Palazzo Nuovo. The Capitoline Museums are considered to be the first museum in the world and have an outstanding collection of Antique art.

• Come in the afternoon: the Capitoline Museums are usually packed with school groups in the morning, but they are seldom there in the afternoon.

• Plan to spend from 45 minutes to 4 hours inside, on average the visit takes 2 hours (the audio-guide is programmed for 1,5 hours).

• The ticket is valid for 4 hours, you won’t be able to enter after time is up, but once you’ve entered - you can stay inside as long as you want.

• The site is really big, so the crowds won’t disturb you much. There may be a crowd in front of the most popular statues, like Lupa Capitolina (the wolf that rescued Romulus and Remus who founded later the city of Rome) or the Equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius.

• The queue for the tickets can take up to 30 minutes of your time during peak hours. You can skip the line and have priority access if you book your ticket online.

• When there’s a temporary exhibition taking place - avoid coming during the first two and the last two weeks of it. You can check the current and upcoming exhibits on the museums’ official website.
